Admissions
1. How many Secondary 1 classes will there be in 2024?
The details for Secondary 1 class allocations are not available at this point. Based on the 2023 allocations, we have 7 classes.
2. Is there a difference between Temasek Junior College (TJC) and TMS?
TJC is an IP (Integrated Programme) school. It offers a 6-year course where students do not sit for Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC) Examinations, but will graduate with the GCE ‘A’ Level certification.
TMS offers a 4-year programme with a 5-year option, students graduate with the Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC).
In short, students who are posted to TMS will have a choice of going to either ITE, junior college or polytechnic at the end of 4 – 5 years, whereas those going to TJC will have to be sure they want to take the junior college route right from Sec One.
3. Is Temasek Secondary affiliated to Temasek Junior College or even Temasek Polytechnic?
Temasek Secondary School is not affiliated to Temasek Junior College or Temasek Polytechnic.
4. My first child is already studying at Temasek Secondary School, but I am not confident that my second child can make the grade. Can he/she still enter based on the fact that he/she has an older sibling in the school?
Most students are placed in secondary schools through the S1 posting process, which takes place once the PSLE results are released. Students are posted based primarily on DSA or the PSLE Results.
Unlike primary school admissions, the fact the child has an older sibling in the school will not affect the outcome of the posting.
5. What are my chances if I appeal to TMS?
Outcomes of appeal cases are determined by many factors every year. Those who meet the Cut Off Point will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Academic Support and Pathways in TMS
6. Does your school provide remedial/extra lessons for weaker students or is there an assumption that parents should engage a tuition teacher?
There are no expectations for parents to engage a tuition teacher for students. They may do so if they choose to.
The school provides remedial and extra lessons for individual subjects which students are weak in.
Teachers are also available for consultation after school when students approach them.
7. How does your school select students for Economics and Computing?
Selection of students for Sec 3 courses is based solely on merit.
For Economics, students are considered based on their Sec 2 Science grades and overall Sec 2 performance.
For Computing, students are considered based on their Sec 2 Mathematics results. Interested students are also required to sit for a Computing Aptitude Test to assess their suitability.

8. How many Normal Academic students will proceed to do the GCE ‘O’ Level at the end of Sec 4?
For the past few years, all NA students were eligible to be promoted to Sec 5 to sit for the GCE ‘O’ Level. More than 50% of our NA students have also qualified for the Polytechnic Foundation Programme (PFP). Parents can find out more about PFP at https://www.polytechnic.edu.sg/pfp/
9. With such high cut-off points for NA and NT students, how does the school stretch the Normal Course students’ development?
For the past few years, our 4NA students have done well at the N-level with many of them qualifying for the Polytechnic Foundation Programme (PFP) and the Direct Entry Scheme to Polytechnic Programme (DPP).
For those who have decided to continue on in TMS, almost every NA student qualified for polytechnic after O-level.
Programmes for NT students are specially tailored to increase core competencies and self-management skills. NT students are also offered up to six subjects at N-level of which Science is a compulsory subject.
10. Will students in the Normal Course have opportunities to take some subjects at higher level when they are in Temasek Secondary School?
For the Lower Secondary, they are able to do so through Subject-Based-Banding (SBB).
Through SBB, Sec 1 NA and Sec 1 NT students can take higher level subjects (at Normal Academic and/or Express levels) if they meet the qualifying criteria. The SBB subjects available are English Language, Mathematics, Science and/or Mother Tongue Language.
Students can consider taking selected Humanities subjects at a more demanding level from Sec 2.
For Upper Secondary, NA students are able to take up to a maximum of 3 SBB subjects which means that these students will sit for the GCE O-level examination for these SBB subjects at the end of Secondary 4, rather than wait till Secondary 5.
Co-Curricular Activities
11. Can my child have more than one CCA?
Due to the demands of each CCA in terms of training and competition commitments, it is not recommended for students to take on more than one core CCA. However, there is an option to take on a non-core CCA. In TMS, the Temasek Acappella Group (TAG), which is our non-core CCA, is an option for students to explore.
Students are also encouraged to take on Student Leadership especially if they are interested to develop their leadership skills.
12. Does my child need to attend a CCA if he/she is in an external team /activity/club/society?
All students must be in a school-based CCA, unless they are in the Singapore National Youth Orchestra (SNYO) or the Singapore Youth Chinese Orchestra (SYCO). School-based CCAs allow students to build a sense of belonging with friends in the school.
Student may participate in external activities, but not in lieu of their school-based CCAs. Attendance for these activities will not be recognised as part of the CCA experience.
13. Does the school recognise my child’s accomplishment in external activities (e.g. golf and swimming) if they go for competitions for organisations, etc.?
If the student wants to be recognised by the school for the competitions that they take part in, they must take part in the school category of these competitions and get approval from the HOD/CCA for them to represent Temasek Secondary School in these competitions. This is provided that their commitments to external activities do not clash with their school-based CCA training.
14. Does your school have a strong performing arts culture?
Yes, the school is strong in the aesthetics CCA and have demonstrated this in the SYF Arts Presentation. For example, teams from Drama and Dance attained Distinctions in the 2021 SYF, while the rest attained Accomplishment. The pop acappella group has emerged as champions several times over the years.
Character Development
15. What kind of programmes does your school have that can prepare my child for the working world? We have a progressive set of Education and Career Guidance (ECG) programmes, which include
- personality profiling,
- HALOS (Harnessing Applied Learning Opportunities for Students) in Secondary 2,
- work attachments,
- talks on the labour market trends and
- the annual Career Guidance Day.
The school actively uses the MySkillsfuture Portal to help students discover their interests and strengths, and to empower them to embark on a journey of self-discovery.
In addition, our academic, character and citizenship education and co-curricular programmes equip students with 21st Century Competencies such as critical and inventive thinking, information and communication skills and cross-cultural awareness. These are essential competencies that all students will need when he/she enters the working world.
16. With so many opportunities for student leadership development in the school, how does the school help Student Leaders manage their academic workload and student leadership commitments?
Like all other schools, TMS has a homework and assessment policy which ensures students are able to manage their daily homework and to give them ample time to prepare for their tests and examinations.
The school monitors the academic results of all student leaders.
Students who do not reach an expected level of performance are mentored closely by teachers to help them better manage their time as part of leadership and life skills development. If necessary, student leaders are offloaded from some duties to give them time to focus on their studies.
Support for Learning Needs
17. My child has diagnosed learning needs. What kinds of support does TMS offer?
We have teachers who are trained to understand and support the students with special learning needs. The school is also equipped with an Allied Educator for Learning Behavioural Support and a resource room for coaching these students so that they can adjust their strategies for optimal learning.
